Alterações do ritmo biológico no transtorno de humor bipolar

Abstract

Objectives: The aim of this report is to evaluate biological rhythm disruption in a case-­‐ control study nested in a population-­‐based cross-­‐section of people aged 18 to 24 years old. Methods: Caseness was confirmed with the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-­‐IV (SCID). The Biological Rhythm Interview Assessment in Neuropsychiatry (BRIAN) was used to measure biological rhythm. The severity of depressive symptoms was measured with the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS), and to assess the intensity of manic symptoms we utilized the Young Mania Rating Scale (YMRS). The Linear Regression was elaborated to account for potential confounders. Results: The sample consisted of 231 subjects. Of these, 94 were control subjects, 82 had major depression and 55 had bipolar disorder (33 type I and 22 type II). Irregular biological rhythm was associated with a diagnosis of bipolar disorder (40.40±9.78; p<0.001) and major depression (36.39±9.22; p>0.001) when compared with healthy controls (27.67±6.88). Furthermore, the severity of depression symptoms was highly correlated with the total BRIAN scores (r=0.592; p>0.001). Discussion: This population-­‐based study further reinforces the notion that bipolar disorder and major depression are associated with impairment in biological rhythm.
